Albany - - All over Georgia, people wore purple Friday in support of the 2nd Annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
The international observance sheds light on the growing number of seniors victimized by physical and emotional abuse.
People who work with the elderly say the abuse often comes in the form of people taking advantage of senior's finances.
Sadly, the abusers are often close to the victim.
"Oddly enough, those who would seek to abuse the senior are more dependent on the senior than the senior is on them. The individuals can be family members. In fact, the majority of the abusers are family members," says Elaine Wilson from the Southwest Georgia Council on Aging.
Wilson says abuse victims are usually women 75 years of age and older. Many times, victims are scared to report the abuse.
