Americus -- Over 100 golfers were out of the course at Georgia SouthWestern Friday, helping Americus native Leonard Pope raise money for tornado relief.
It wasn't always safe on the course for the NFL star, as Pope had to dodge the errant back-swing of more than one young golfer, but the former Georgia Bulldog is doing his part to raise funds for the Sumter Regional Hospital and surrounding area with a two-day charity event.
This is Pope's first big charity event, and he says while he hopes there's never another reason like this to necessitate a fundraiser, its nice to know the support is there.
The Arizona Cardinals tight end spent most of the day posing for pictures and interacting with the fans, and says he's better serving the community keeping his clubs in the bag.
"I hit one or two balls, and knocked some limbs down in the trees, but I didn't want to knock anybody's window out," says Pope.
The Leonard Pope all-star weekend continues with a black-tie auction dinner Friday night, and a basketball game Saturday at South Georgia Tech at 2pm.
