Autopsy conducted on 6-year-old boy

June 15, 2007

Thomas County --  We've got new details on the shooting death of a 6-year old boy in Thomas County. Preliminary results of an autopsy performed Friday confirm the shooting Thursday afternoon was an accident.

Investigators say 6-year old Elrui Jacob was playing at his 11-year old neighbor's home. Grandparents were next door, but no adults were in the home. The boys were apparently playing a game of cops and robbers, when they found a .22-caliber rifle that belonged to the older boy's father.

"The 6 year old found the real gun, the 11 year old tried to take it from him," said Investigator Tim Watkins of the Thomas County Sheriff's Office. "They were pulling it back in forth, trying to wrestle the gun away, and it accidently discharged, striking the 6-year-old in the chest."

The 11-year old called 911. Jacob was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
