Cairo -- Farrell Siler, who was a firefighter for 23 years, was chief for two years. His letter of resignation cites personal reasons, ranging from health problems, and wanting to change his environment.

"He's wanting to explore new opportunities, and I think that he'll probably go into the teaching field," said City Manager William Whitson. "And so he felt like that this would be a good time to make that move, and I wish him all the success."

The city is looking within the department, and speaking with fire chiefs from around the region to possibly replace Siler.  They say the process will take 60 to 90 days.
