Albany -- Civil rights leaders broke ground Tuesday for the expansion of the Albany Civil Rights Institute.

The 12,000 square foot addition will house new exhibits, office and storage space.

"We will then have a physical asset which will tell the story of the Albany Civil Rights movement and what it meant to the greater national movement," said Former ATI Director Tommy Chatmon.

"We want to teach them what happened in the past, where they are now and to guard them against those kind of atrocities in the future," said Board Member Helen Young.

A capital campaign is underway to raise $1 million to help the museum operate once it opens. That campaign kicked off with a $300,000 contribution from Mt. Zion Church.
