Tax director: millage rate misrepresented

June 8, 2007

Albany -- Dougherty County's overall millage rate is one of the highest in the state, but the tax director says it's not quite as high as represented.

Denver Hooten says the way the department of revenue compiles its information is not uniform.  She says they should only group the millage rates for the entire county together in the ranking, not municipalities, but they did for Dougherty County.

"They are not presenting it fairly as far as the things they are lumping together," Hooten says .

Hooten says the Department of Revenue may consider Dougherty County a consolidated government, since Albany is the only city, and that's why they include Albany's millage in the total amount.
