Valdosta - The blanket of smoke covering South Georgia continues to thicken, putting many counties under a health advisory and the cancellation of weekend events in others.
As conditions worsen the South Health District issued the advisor for ten south Georgia counties including Lowndes, Tift, and Lanier.
It's prompted Lowndes Parks and Recreation, the Boys and Girls Club and other agencies in Lowndes to cancel weekend sporting events, pool openings, and other activities for the community's safety. "We don't want to do anything that's going to put somebody in a situation that could be a danger. When the health department tells us, it's definitely a done deal, but the rest we are doing on common sense," says Eric Hahn, Interim Director for Lowndes Parks and Recreation.
The South Health District say exposure to the smoke can hurt your eyes, irritate your respiratory system and worsen chronic heart and lung diseases.
They are urging everyone in the affected areas to stay indoors as much as possible.
