Scottsboro, Al.- With just a two shot lead heading into Friday's final round of the National Junior College Division II golf tournament,Darton College coach Dale Dover told his Cavaliers to treat today's round like a match play event against second place South Mountain Arizona Community College.
Dover also told his players to try to grab an early lead over the South Mountain player in their group and turn up the pressure coming down the stretch.
And Darton did just that. The Cavaliers shoot a nine under par 279 to win by 12 shots over South Mountain which shot 289.It is the third straight national title for the Cavaliers and coach Dover says perhaps the most important.
The first two according to Dover were won with bascially the same players.
But this year was a new team with the same result which Dover says validates his program.
Bill Jones led the way for Darton with a 68 and is the medalist at the national tournament as well as a Junior College All-American.
Coleman Calhoun also shot a 68 today to earn All-American honors as does Oliver Tunhill.
This was the last tournament at Darton for Tunhill who is returning to England to turn pro.
Troy Bartkowicz recovers from a tough start and fires a 71 and Ches-ley Gunn did his job by posting a solid round of 73 to take the pressure his over teammates.
Dale Dover is the national coach of the year for a third consecutive year.
