Lee County Hires New Hoops Coach

May 21, 2007

Leesburg -- The Lee County boys basketball team has a new head coach, as the Trojans bring in Earl Barrett to lead the hoops team this season.

Barrett has been in coaching for seventeen years, starting as a grad assistant at Valdosta State, and comes to Lee County from Boyd Anderson in Ft. Lauderdale.

The head coach made a couple of stops in between, including coaching NBA All-Star Amare Stoudamire at Cypress Creek high school.

The Trojans won the region championship for the first time in 22-years last season, but while speaking with the players for the first time Monday, Barrett told his team he's looking for more than just one title.

"That is a wonderful attribute for them, I give them kudos for it," says Barrett.  "But the one thing about last year is its over. So we got to get in there this year and do what we need to do, as a group, as a team, as a program."

Lee County hired former Georgia Southern assistant Fran McPherson as the girls head coach earlier this month.
