Attempted Rape in Albany

May 20, 2007

Albany -- An Albany man is behind bars tonight charged with aggravated assault.

49-year-old Lugene Thomas attempted to rape a woman inside a home on Florence Drive in Albany.

Raymond Simonton was working in his garage early Saturday morning when he heard someone kick in a door across the street from his home on Florence Drive.

"I walked out front to check it out and see what was going on and I heard lady hollering for help, 'Get off me,' 'Help!' 'Somebody please call the police.' So I felt like I did what anyone would have done, so I called the police."

Inside the home a struggle ensued. The victim was thrown into a window, where she sustained cuts to her arm.

Within in minutes the police arrived. Inside the home they found 49-year-old Lugene Thomas on top of the woman with his hand around her throat.

Residents of this typically quiet neighborhood were shocked to hear something like this took place just doors away.

"For something like this to happen in the neighborhood just right beside me, it makes me more aware that I have little daughters and other things that I need to be more protective of," says neighbor Jimmy Keaton.

Fantella Buchanan, who lives nearby says, "I'm going to be more careful. I'm going to stay in the house. That's what I'm going to do."

No word yet on the condition of the victim.

Thomas remains at the Dougherty County Jail.
