Albany -- Two young boys are badly burned after starting the fire that trapped them in their Tremont Drive bedroom.

Fire investigators say the five year old ignited a mattress near the doorway, trapping the boys. They received second and third degree burns when their mother encouraged the children to run through the flames to escape.

Witnesses say the boys and their mother ran out of the house onto the lawn of their Tremont Drive home around 7:00 a.m.

Both boys received second and third degree burns.  One of the boys received burns around his face, suggesting there may also be damage to his lungs.

The boys were transported to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, but could likely be transferred somewhere else that specializes in burns.

Albany Fire Department Chief James Carswell says investigators are still looking into the cause of the fire.
