Albany -- A former Albany Police Officer pleads guilty to sexually abusing a 15 year old girl, but will not serve any time in jail.

In a plea bargain with prosecutors, child molestation charges against 43 year old Benny Tatum were dropped. He pleaded guilty to sexual battery and violation of oath of office. Tatum got five years probation.

Prosecutors say Tatum forced the 15 year old female relative against a wall and molested her.

District Attorney Ken Hodges said they agreed to the plea bargain to spare the teenage victim having to testify in a court trial. Hodges said "the victim obviously had received a lot of pressure from her family members, and was under a tremendous amount of stress."

Tatum was a seven year veteran of the Albany Police Department. He was suspended without pay in October 2006, when he was indicted.
