Americus honors former coach with a roast

May 10, 2007

Americus - There are not many high school coaches who can say that two of their former players went on to become coaches in the NFL.

But former Americus High coach Jimmy Hightower can.

Those two coaches Georgia Tech's Chan Gailey and former Atlanta Falcons head coach Dan Reeves were among those who got a chance to roast their former coach Thursday night.

The event is a benefit for the Americus-Sumter High touchdown club.

Jimmy Hightower won state titles in football, basketball and baseball when he was coaching at Americus High.

Both Gailey and Reeves say Hightower is the biggest reason they got into coaching.

And both say it is tough to roast someone you admire.

Dan Reeves said "It is hard to roast him. It is more of a toast for me."

Chan Gailey said "We have got to tell a couple of things. I am obligated to my teammates to get on him a little bit. But we are here to honor him."

Jimmy Hightower said "I look back and see an awful lot of memories over a lot of years. I wasn't really thinking about anything like this. But this is really an honor that I will always cherish."

The Jimmy Hightower Roast will end with a golf tournament on Friday at Wolf Creek Golf Club.
