Tifton -- Sentencing was handed down on Monday to former Tift County School Board President Richard Golden.

Golden, who is the owner of a waste disposal business, was set to stand trial on misdemeanor charges of illegal dumping stemming from a 2005 investigation that revealed he had allegedly dumped commercial kitchen waste into the city's water system.

Golden entered a last-minute guilty plea before the start of his trial and was sentenced to 12 months probation, 40 hours of community service, eight days in jail to be served on weekends, and ordered to pay a $500 fine.

This is not the first time Golden has faced legal troubles. In 2004 he was arrested after pointing a gun at a man he found fishing on his private pond.

Tift County State Court Solicitor Jason K. Hoffman called Monday's ruling, "an appropriate sentence."
