FEMA to assist in Atkinson fire

May 7, 2007

Atkinson County - Atkinson County will become the third county to get help from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Through its Fire Management Assistance Grant, FEMA will reimburse the county for much of the cost of fighting the Roundabout Swamp Fire near Pearson.

FEMA will pay for up to 75% of eligible costs.

Emergency Managers say any amount will help the state, the Georgia Forestry Commission... and Atkinson County shoulder the burden.  "This is costing an untold number of dollars and there's no way one entity could manage or pay for this kind of assistance," says David Moore, EMA Director for Atkinson County.

The Georgia Forestry Commission expects the fire will cost the agencies millions of dollars.

Brantley County and Ware County also received federal assistance for the wildfires there.
