Valdosta - When Valdosta State hired Thomas Macera to coach their women's softball team the expectations were national championships.
After all, Macera has won two national titles with two different teams in consecutive years.
The Lady Blazer softball team hoping that the number two is Macera's lucky number.
Because in his second season at Valdosta State, the 5th ranked Lady Blazers have won 43 games, the east division title in the Gulf South Conference and will host a NCAA Division II regional next weekend.
Before beginning their quest for a national title, the VSU softball team takes aim at the Gulf South title this weekend at the conference tournament.
Thomas Macera said "I always say the season starts now. You have the conference and you have got to win the region to go to nationals. What you have done to this point is great but in the big picture it doesn't mean a lot. It is what we do now."
The 5th ranked VSU women's softball team plays Southern Arkansas Friday at 3:00p.m. in the opening round of the Gulf South Conference tournament in Southhaven, Mississippi.
If the Lady Blazers win that game, they will play again Friday night at 9:30p.m..
