Albany -- Are you ready for hurricane season? It's just a month away.   Experts predict another above-average hurricane season.

Now is the time to start preparing your home or property for a disaster. Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine says people should find out if their property is at risk for flooding and take the necessary steps to be prepared for the next storm. He reminds people that standard homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage in most cases.

FEMA's National Flood Insurance Program does offer protection against flooding. The average premium is about $500 a year, but there are lower cost policies available as well. Hurricane season starts June 1st.
