Valdosta - It has been another banner for Valdosta State athletics and on Monday night the players and coaches were honored for not only their performance on the field but also in the classroom and the community.
The most valuable players for seven Valdosta State athletic squads were named at the banquet.
The Male Athlete of the Year was presented to football receiver Jeffrey Felton from Cordele.
Softball standout Kristen Lindsey is the Female Aathlete of the Yyear.
Retiring baseball coach Tommy Thomas was also recognized as is retiring marketing and ticket manager Bill England.
The golf team won the Lamar Pearson Community Service award.
The 14 member team performed more than 320 hours of community service.
A program adminstered by the VSU student athlete council which also sponsored Monday night's banquet.
Senior woman administrator Jennifer Head said "They help with freshman orientation with the freshman banquet or the cookout we do. We will also do Habitat for Humanity. Any kind of community service projects, this group is the one that sets it up for each team and runs it."
The Most Valuable Player awards were presented to Nick Copeland-Baseball, Herman Burge-Men's Basketball, Carly Peterson-Women's Basketball, Alan McGough-Men's Cross Country, Melissa Daugherty-Women's Cross Country, Alex Acosta-Softball, Laura Lee Atkinson-Volleyball, Ariel Harmon Co-Ed Cheerleading, Sara Moye All-Girl Cheerleading and Maggie-Woodard-Red Hots Dance Team.
Tucker Pruitt won the VSU Male Student-Athlete Academic Award and Ewelina Gad and Khaleh Thomas were the co-winners of the Female Student-Athlete Academic Award.
