Two Tifton murder suspects in custody, one on the loose
May 1, 2007
Tifton-- Tifton Police need your help to find a suspected killer. Investigators say three teenagers, including a relative of the victim are responsible for a home invasion murder.
Two of them are in jail but 18-year-old Shurrod Rich isn't in custody and police don't know where he is. They do consider him armed and dangerous and they want you to call 229-382-3132 if you know where he is.
Shurrod, 15-year-old Layton Lester and 17-year-old Rodney King all face charges in the murder of 66-year old Lorene Bozeman inside the front door of her home around ten o'clock Sunday night. Relatives in the neighborhood heard the shots.
When they couldn't reach Bozeman by phone, they went to her Collins Street home to investigate.
"Finally we went down there and got there and she was just laying on the floor, already shot, so I came back up here and I looked around the area, but I didn't see anybody," said nephew Victor Clay.
The youngest suspect, Layton Lester, is Bozeman's grand-nephew. They say he knew the victim had a large amount of cash in the home and the three teens went there to rob her. Lester has been arrested on murder charges, and has been charged as an adult.
Bozeman was shot multiple times after she confronted the robbers. Her 88-year old mother was also inside the house but wasn't injured.
King was arrested on Felony Theft by receiving stolen property charges for having been in possession of a quantity of money stolen from the victim. Police are looking for Shurrod Rich. If you have any helpful information, call the Tifton Police Department.
The GBI was called into to assist with the investigation.
