New Orleans, La. - The New Orleans Saints made sure they would not lost start defensive end Charles Grant to free agency by tagging him their franchise player two months ago.
The month meant that Grant's salary would have been determined by averaging the salaries of the top paid players at his position.
The calculators are no longer needed after the former Miller County Pirate signed a seven-year contract extension on Thursday.
Grant, speaking on telephone from Orlando Thursday night, told WALB News 10 Sports the new contract is worth $63 million and includes a $20 million signing bonus.
Grant, who left Georgia after his junior year, was the top pick of the Saints in 2002 and has 35 career sacks in five NFL seasons.
