Albany - The old saying is practice makes perfect.
But not for Southland's Nick Goeller.
He won the GISA AAA state long jump title last year with very little experience.
Goeller is back to defend his title Friday morning at the Hugh Mills Stadium.
And he has had about the same preparation due to the fact he is also a member of the Southland team.
An exchange student from Germany, Goeller has participated in in the long jump in two meets this season and won them both.
He even broke the school record in the region meet last week.
At the state meet, he takes aim at the GISA AAA record which is over 22 feet.
Nick Goeller said "I hope I can jump something over 22 (feet) this year. That would be cool. I just want to win it. That is all that counts. I don't care how long I jump."
Southland coach Jack Harris said "The thing about Nick is that he looks at it one time and he has got it down. The long jump is something he excels at."
Nick Goeller says he will move back to Frankfurt, Germany after he graduates from Southland.
The GISA state track meet is underway at Hugh Mills Stadium and will conclude on Saturday.
