Tifton boy still banned from school

April 18, 2007

Tifton - - The State Board of Education agrees a Tift County 10-year old accused of bringing a gun to school should be expelled.

Markel Stevenson's mother appealed his expulsion saying he has no way to attend school because he's too young to be accepted at Tift County's alternative school.

In October, Stevenson had a hearing in juvenile court. Police charged him with three counts of aggravated assault, two counts of terroristic threats, and bringing a gun to school.

Students say Stevenson threatened them with a loaded gun. He was expelled from Charles Spencer Elementary and can't attend the alternative school for two years.

The state board of education reviewed the appeal and decided in favor of the Tift County decision.

The Stevensons can appeal to superior court if they choose.
