Albany-  During city budget discussions, the city commission questioned just how far the jurisdiction of Dougherty County School Officers extends.  The question was brought up by commissioners after Lincoln Elementary Magnet School was placed under lockdown three weeks ago because of gang violence.

Tuesday Dougherty County Sheriff Jamil Saba who grants the officers their arrest powers cleared up the issue.

"As long as their on school property or pertaining to a school bus or what have you they've got jurisdiction there. There's a couple of them on there that I certified that can go any spot that they need to go anywhere, and I felt like this needed to be done so they can do what investigations they need to do," said Sheriff Jamil Saba, Dougherty County.

While the Sheriff gives officers their arrest powers, the Dougherty County School Police ultimately report to the School Board.
