Albany - South Georgia's newest mascot has a new name. Goober is the official mascot of the South Georgia Peanuts.

Goober came to Deerfield Windsor's lower campus in Albany Thursday to meet 3rd grader Lanier Freeman, who chose the mascot's winning name. Like Lanier, all kids 12 and under who register for the kid's club, known as "Goober's Gang", can get into all of the baseball team's home games for free.

"Well, goober is a name for peanut and it is a person's name and I call my dad that a lot." He's a goober? "Yes," said Lanier. General Manager Keith Michlig said, "It's really a good initiative to try and give something back to the kids in the community so that they can come out and enjoy some baseball at the park this summer."

The first home game for the Peanuts is May 24th. Kids must enroll in Goober's Gang by May 5th to get a free team T-shirt which will be their admission to games.
