Tift police excavation turns up nothing

April 12, 2007

Tifton -- Law men worked into late into Wednesday night searching for possible skeletal remains in a part of Tifton that is reported to have substantial drug activity.

We have learned this morning that the GBI agents and Tift County Sheriff's Deputies who were working the 3rd Avenue scene Wednesday evening did not find any remains, and apparently nothing unusual was discovered.

Wednesday night, Major Jason Jones with the Tift County Sheriff's Office had this to say:

"We're in the process of serving a search warrant in conjunction with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, and unfortunately at this point, we don't have any other information that we can release."

Jones would not confirm or deny that they were searching for a body. "I'm not going to comment on any particulars of the investigation," he said.

We are told that police were acting on a tip that a body- or the remains of a body- was in the area.

We will have more information on this story as it becomes available.
