Savannah -- One person is dead after a wreck on Interstate 16 near Metter Tuesday morning. Traffic was backed up for hours as officers cleared and investigated the scene.

As of this afternoon, traffic was still being rerouted off the interstate through Metter.

An SUV towing a U-Haul trailer and a police vehicle from Dougherty County were involved. A passenger in the SUV was killed. The driver was hospitalized.

The officer was checked out by medical personnel and released.

The police officer was on his way to Chatham County to take part in Operation Rolling Thunder, a multi-agency crackdown on speeding.

The Georgia State Patrol investigation is ongoing.
