State leaders will eat with prisoners in Americus

March 11, 2007

Americus -- State officials are scheduled to be in Americus Monday, assessing damaged areas and feeding state prisoners.

Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle and Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin will be at the Oak Hill Cemetery having lunch with the inmates around noon. Prison labor has helped with cleanup at the hospital and work at the Disaster Recovery Center.

"They will be essentially showing their support for the efforts of the prison workers, the inmate population. Their effort to pay back," said GEMA Public Affairs Officer Tracy Smith.

Up to 120 inmates may be working throughout the disaster stricken area on any given day.
