Albany -- Health experts say HIV and AIDS cases are increasing in Albany. An area church is helping those living with the disease.

A panel of doctors, nurses, and counselors spoke at Mount Zion Baptist Church. The event allowed the congregation to have an open conversation about removing the stigma associated with AIDS and to encourage people to get tested.

The pastor says it's important for the church to work to prevent the spread of the virus and to help those affected.

"These are not bad people. These are not people that need to be stigmatized and ostracized by the community, but they need to be embraced and cared for," said Church Pastor Daniel Simmons.

The event was part of the National HIV/AIDS Week of Prayer.

The church has a team that will go into the community and spread this message to other civic groups and churches.
