Baker County dead identified

March 4, 2007

Newton -- After six deaths and tons of damage in Baker County, emergency management crews and the community are working together to get things back to normal.

There are over seven miles of devastation off Pretoria Road.   The twisted steel frame of a trailer shows where six people lost their lives during the storm. Almost 50 families had damage to their homes.

"We do have totals. We've done a survey of the county and we have totals 43 total. Fifteen  destroyed homes, nine major damage, and the rest of those were minor," said Baker EMA Director  Randy Belinc.

The American Red Cross is reporting even more destroyed homes in Baker County. Some 100 homes there were without electricity after the tornado struck.      Crews have been working hard to restore power, and about 2 percent are still without.

We now know the names of the six people killed in the storm.  They are Daron Owens, his wife Phyliss, and their 9-year-old daughter Kursey Owens.

Willie Sue Brinkley was also in the home along with JoAnn Brinkley and 13-year-old Kierra Crumbley.  Two others were in that home, but they fortunately survived.

Funeral arrangements for the others are forthcoming.
