Local lawyer arrested in North Ga.

March 1, 2007

Douglasville -- An Albany attorney is on the wrong side of the law, charged with trying to help a Douglas County inmate escape from jail.

Fifty-two year old Paul Keenan is charged with criminal conspiracy to commit escape and providing a weapon to an inmate. Investigators say Keenan tried to help 20-year-old Dareon Varner, of Atlanta, who was charged with robbing a Douglasville Hampton Inn at gunpoint.

A spokesman for the Douglas Sheriff's office said they discovered a large saw blade, commonly used to prune bushes, in Varner's possession.

Keenan is being held in the Douglas County Jail pending a bond hearing Friday morning.
