February 27, 2007

Albany - Albany Technical College is joining the world of college athletics.

The school announcing Tuesday  they will field a men's basketball team next season.

The first coach for the Albany Tech Titans, a name picked by students, will be Sylvester Patterson.

Albany Tech will compete in the Georgia Junior College Athletic Association where they will schedule their region games with the Darton College Lady Cavaliers.

Darton will play the women's team from a region school on the same day Albany Tech will play the men's squad.

Albany Tech though not ready to say where they will play their home games since they have no gym on campus.

But one thing coach Patterson knows he has close by are a lot of potential recruits.

Sylvester Patterson said "Just look at the area high schools, Monroe, Dougherty County, Westover, Albany High. There is a lot of talent, Lee County, there is a lot of talent around here. So, it is just a great opportunity to pull some of that talent in and make a great basketball team."

Coach Patterson says the team will hold tryouts in the spring.

Albany Tech also plans to field a women's softball team in the next year.
