Lake Buena Vista, Fl.- Growing up in Cairo, Willie Harris says he always dreamed of playing for the Atlanta Braves.
Harris said "Growing up as a kid it was always a dream to play for the Braves and when the opportunity came and I just jumped right on it."
Willie Harris may be playing with the Braves now but he is not on their major league roster.
The team signed him to a minor league contract hoping the former Chicago White Sox second baseman might fill the void when the cash strapped Braves had to let Marcus Giles leave.
Harris said "They know who I am. If they didn't. I wouldn't be here."
Willie Harris name is not being mentioned much for the Braves open second base position. But Harris says he has got one thing on the other candidates. And that is experience. And that includes a World Series ring.
Harris said "I think I have an edge on some of the guys being that I have some games under my belt on the major league level. But just to come in here and get started. You know whatever happens is going to happen. I am just going to play hard and see what happens."
And if it happens that Willie Harris is on the Atlanta Braves opening day roster, it will be good news back in Cairo where his friends and family won't have to drive far to see him play.
Willie Harris and the late Jackie Robinson are the only two baseball players from Cairo who have made it to the major leagues.
