Valdosta - Moody Air Force base has seen many changes over the years, and thanks to a former Georgia Senator, closure wasn't one of them.

Former U.S. Senator Sam Nunn helped save Moody from the threat of realignment in 1991, which could have closed the base and caused a great loss for Lowndes County and the surrounding areas.

Thursday, he returned to see how far the base has come and where its going in the future.  "There's a lot of exciting things going on here, particularly on thing that's interesting to me is the A-10 aircraft close air support aircrafts are coming back," Nunn says.

Nunn co-chairs the Nuclear Threat Initiative with Ted Turner.

The goal of the organization is to reduce the global threat of nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons.
