Teacher injured breaking up fight

February 16, 2007

Lakeland - Attorneys for a Lanier County teen accused of stabbing a teacher say she brought a knife to school because she feared for her life.

17 year-old Sarita Cervantes is charged with aggravated assault and carrying a weapon on school property after a fight Tuesday morning at Lanier County High School. A teacher who tried to break up a fight between Cervantes and another girl was stabbed in the hand with a small knife Cervantes brought to school.

Cervantes' attorney claims the girl told school officials the day before that the other student threatened her.  "She brought it to school because she feels the school did not address her concerns that she had brought to their attention the day before and that she was scared to death," says family attorney Paul Hamilton.

Cervantes is being held in at the Berrien County Jail.

School officials say all students involved have been suspended.  The teacher needed stitches for the wound on her hand.
