Baker County - The trial for two Newton Police Officers charged with involuntary manslaughter is underway in Baker County. Newton Police Officers David Zigan and James Freeman were charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with the shooting death of Hershel Bullard.
Officers say Bullard, the owner of the trailer park, opened fire on them when they responded to a dispute in October of 2005. Two bullets struck Captain David Zigan. The officers fired back, killing Bullard.
South Georgia Judicial Circuit District Attorney Joe Mulholland wanted a jury trial. The defense asked for a bench trial. Mullholland fought the issue to the State Supreme Court and won, though he did later agree to allow a bench trial.
