The University system of Georgia wants to require criminal background checks on all new employees.
But the head of the Georgia Chapter of the American Association of University Professors, Hugh Hudson, says some have "deep concerns" about the potential for abuse under the policy.
While we agree the privacy of University system employees is important, we have "deep concerns" about the potential dangers of hiring people at our colleges and universities without background checks.
We send many of our best and brightest young people for higher education in Georgia. We have the right to be assured that the people who teach or work on the campus with our college students have been thoroughly checked out.
Some Universities including Albany State already do the background checks. So should the rest.
We urge the Chancellor to move forward with this method of making our campuses ever safer.
