Camilla -- Mitchell County middle school held a big pep rally at the school Thursday, and while a big football player was the center of attention, it was a test, not a game, that was their central focus.
Former Miller County stand-out and current NFL defensive end Charles Grant paying a visit to Camilla, encouraging students before they take the Criterion Referenced Competency Test and other benchmark tests.
The 6' 3", 290-pounder has played five seasons in the NFL, and is well-known for his work in the community.
Grant got the Mitchell County students fired up with everything from posters and game tickets to a dance contest, and says reaching out to kids in the community is very important.
"When I was in school, nobody came out and spoke with us," says Grant. "People don't understand how important it is to come out and speak to the kids, and let them know someone cares about them and their future."
Grant also says its very important for role models to be out in the community sharing their time.
"God has blessed us. We're making millions of dollars. A couple dollars, a couple hours means a lot to these kids. Just give them your time, and show them your appreciation, let them know you love them. I think that's very important."
Grant finishing with 64 tackles, six sacks, and three forced fumbles for the Saints last season, and is currently a free agent.
