Albany-- Albany literacy leaders believe a simple book of words can can help more high-schoolers graduate.
The excitement in Westover High School's gym Tuesday afternoon wasn't for a game. Instead, the Albany/Dougherty Certified Literacy Commitment Program handed out thesauri to 9th grade students.
The group also hands out dictionaries to elementary school children but decided to expand their literacy venture to high schools. Some students are already pumped to use the new tool.
"I was kind of excited because I don't really have one at home and my mom makes us look up words when we ask her so this will be good to use at home and at school," said Westover 9th grader Megan Lewis.
"This 9th grade class graduates in 2010 and we're promoting graduation. That's what our certified community program is about," said Albany/Dougherty CLCP Director Harriet Hollis Bradford.
The group will visit other high schools throughout the week. Friday at 10 a.m., they'll be at Dougherty High. They'll visit Monroe High School on Wednesday at 2 p.m. They'll visit the SW Regional Achievement Center on Thursday at 10 a.m. Albany High will get a visit on Friday at 3.
