Albany - When Albany State interim head coach Chris Cameron looked for an assistant coach on his staff, he turned to one of his biggest high school rivals.
Chris Cameron's assistant coach is Melvin Drake.
Cameron was a star at Dougherty and Drake at Albany High in the early 1990's where high school basketball in Albany was as competitive as anywhere in the nation between all four county high schools.
Chris Cameron says that Melvin Drake has been a valuable addition to the team in his work with the Rams post players.
And while it has been almost 15 years since they squared off on a court, the two good friends still remember the good old days.
Melvin Drake said "Very competitive. I teased him a lot about me making triple doubles. One morning I got a call on Saturday morning. He told me to check the newspaper out. He had scored a quadruple double.
Chris Cameron said "Those guys were winning more than we won at Dougherty. They got a chance to play for the state twice. I never got a chance to play for a state title. We still talk about that sometimes."
Albany State is on the road this week for games Tuesday at Clark Atlanta and at Stillman College on Thursday.
