Douglas -- Dozens of college Freshmen and Sophomores will descend upon South Georgia College this Saturday to compete in the National Association of Quiz Teams (NAQT) Tournament. SGC has hosted high school tournaments in the past, but this is the first time the college has hosted a college event.
The day-long tournament will test the minds and mettle of the college teams, putting them through several rounds of questions ranging from the Laws of Motion and Roman history to Oscar winners and catch phrases from "The Simpsons." That may seem like a wide range of topic, but it gives the teams a chance to show off their cerebral skills.
"This is a significant tournament because the winner gets an automatic invitation to compete for the national championship" says SGC Quiz Team coach Dr. Michael Butler. "We have schools from Georgia and North Florida coming to SGC to become regional champion, but our team has a bulls-eye on it." SGC's quiz team has been the highest ranked two-year team in Georgia for the past three years."
The national championship, which only twelve community college teams will compete for, will be hosted at the University of Minnesota on April 13-14, 2007. The chance to win the coveted title of National Champion is the dream of thousands of quiz masters across the country, and some will have to go through Douglas to get there.
The NAQT Tournament begins at 9am on Saturday, February 10, and will last until 6pm. Anyone interested in observing this tournament is invited to visit SGC's Davis Hall.
