Albany - - Phoebe Putney Hospital often touts the money it spends on community service projects, but it's ending one of those popular programs.

Starting in March, Phoebe will no longer hand out free baby car seats to families of newborns.

Hospital administrators started the program in 1988 to promote awareness of car seat safety. They say they've accomplished that goal and need to use the money to fund other hospital needs.

"In challenging environments where health care dollars are stressed, where reimbursements are going down, we have to look at the total pictures and find those areas, whether its community benefit, to refocus those dollars," says Spokesperson Jackie Ryan.

Ryan says many parents already get car seats from other places on top of those the hospital provides.
