Colquitt County wants full time State Court Judge

January 24, 2007

Colquitt County-  An increase in misdemeanor crimes and civil cases prompted Colquitt County Commissioners to petition the state for a full-time State Court Judge.  Right now, State Court Judge Richard Kent works part-time.  When he holds court once a month, the justice center courtroom overflows.  Kent said if he could hold court once a week, It would remove some of the burden from Superior Court.

"I would be able to devote more time to the administrative duties whereas now we're just essentially in court going through the cases and then afterward we have to deal with all the paperwork," said Richard Kent, State Court Judge.

Kent says an increase in Moultrie's Hispanic population has also added time to his backlog.  When court workers have to translate cases into Spanish, cases take twice as long.
