Fire leaves two families homeless

January 19, 2007

Dawson - - Fire destroyed a Dawson duplex Friday morning and left two families without homes. The occupants believe the fire started in a laundry room and quickly spread. Everyone got out uninjured, but heartbroken at having lost all their belongings.

Constance Bullock has a lot on her mind.

"Where me and my babies gonna sleep tonight."

It's almost hard to think after a fire ravaged her duplex destroying almost everything she owns.

It happened while Angela Jackson was seeing her children off to school.

"I smelled something and I heard a pop and I was smelling stuff so I went to check the laundry room and once I went in the laundry room, it was just smoke."

She went to wake up Bullock and alert her children.

"By the time I got out of the house and got her, it was already burning in the back."

Jackson's teenage son was already at school at the time.

"When we got to school somebody told me my house was on fire," Andrellious Jackson says.

He left school to check on his family, only to find his house destroyed and family devastated.

"The time she started screaming my name, flames started coming through," Bullock says.

Everyone, including a one year old and three year old, made it out ok. But most of their possessions burned with the home.

"All our games and clothes, everything's gone only thing that we got is the clothes that we got and our book bag and books," Jackson says.

And all his mother can think about is a very grim reality.

"I have nothing."

But loved ones who share the loss.

The families were renting the unit. The state fire marshal's office is investigating to determine what started it.
