VSU promotes Dean to head football coach

January 19, 2007

Valdosta - Chris Hatcher may be gone but the Valdosta State football program expects to keep winning.

The Blazers today named VSU offensive coordinator David Dean as their new head football coach Friday afternoon.

Dean takes over for Chris Hatcher who earlier in the day was named head coach at Georgia Southern University.

Dean started his college coaching career at Valdosta State when Mike Cavan hired him to coach wide receivers in 1988.

When Cavan left VSU after the 1991 season, Dean joined the staff at West Georgia where he coached running backs and coordinated the Wolves potent passing game during the 1990's.

Dean returned to VSU when Chris Hatcher was hired as head coach in 2000 to once again coach wide receivers and special teams.

Hatcher promoted to Dean to offensive coordinator after his first season at VSU and Dean has held that position for the last six years.

David Dean is married to the former Stacie Stott who is a VSU alumnus.

The couple have three daughters, Caroline, 9, Allison, 7 and one-year old Natalie.
