Ocilla - - Irwin County's former Clerk of Superior Court has reportedly plead not guilty to charges that she stole more than $17,000 in county money.

Sharon Martin surrendered to investigators and requested a leave from work in September.

Investigators indicted Martin on theft by conversion and violation of her oath of office. Investigators believe she stole money from a county escrow account in which money is held from pending lawsuits, wages, and garnishments.

In situations like these, Governor Perdue usually forms a panel to decide if an elected official should keep their job.

Martin remains on leave.
