Americus - Georgia Southwestern showed the rest of the Peach Belt they are ready for life in their new conference.
2nd ranked Clayton State needed a 30 foot jump shot at the buzzer to beat the Hurricanes 67-64 in Americus on Wednesday night.
It was the first ever conference game for GSW as a member of the Peach Belt.
Josh McLaurin hit the shot after GSW guard Ross Knight tied the game with a free throw with less than five seconds to play.
McLaurin led the 12-0 Lakers with 16 points and Shawn King had 15 for the Hurricanes who are 7-4 overall and 0-1 in the Peach Belt Conference.
Clayton State women beat the Lady Canes 97-59. The Lady Lakers pulled away with a 23-0 run.
Krystal Thomas led the Lady Canes with 15 points.
Georgia Southwestern is on the road in conference play Saturday in Spartanburg to play USC-Upstate.
In Tifton, the ABAC Fillies fall to Fort McPherson 87-74 at the first ever ABAC Classic.
Turelle ones had 27 points for ABAC who will play Santa Fe Community College from Gainesville, Florida on Thursday night.
Darton beat Andrew 86-36 in the first game of the day.
Dorothy Strong had 20 points for the Lady Cavs who will play South Georgia Tech in the first game of the day Thursday at Gressette Gym at 4:00 P.M..
South Georgia Tech lost to Santa Fe on Wednesday 73-55.
In high school basketball, Calhoun County boys beat Clinch County 72-62 and the Lady Cougars win 66-32 over the Lady Panthers.
