Albany--  The potential economic impact of an upcoming athletic event in Albany is looking sweeter than ever.

City leaders are busy preparing for the first-ever Snickers Energy Bar marathon. Although it's about two months away, the Albany Convention and Visitors Bureau has already received 117 registrations from 13 states, some from as far as California.

The Snickers marathon touts four big events, including a 26-point-2 mile marathon around Albany, a half marathon, a centurion bike race and a one-mile family fun run that will benefit the Dougherty County School System.

"It's just exciting to know that we've got an opportunity to showcase Albany and show off our neighborhoods, our colleges, everything there is to see and do in this area and just feel proud about living in Southwest Georgia," said Albany Convention and Visitors Bureau Vice-President Sara Underdown.

The marathon will take place on March 3rd.  Proceeds will go toward building an in-patient hospice care facility for the Southwest Georgia area. Organizers welcome any volunteers for the big event.
