Albany - - The government is cracking down on air pollution by putting the brakes on trucks that emit harmful pollutants.

This new year, federal regulations mandate cleaner diesel engines in all new rig-trucks and school buses.

The measure is supposed to dramatically cut pollution, but it could make it more expensive for rig-truck buyers.

The Diesel Technology Forum says when the new engines are combined with low-sulfur diesel fuel, they will reduce harmful emissions by up to 98 %.

A representative form the American Trucking Association says "clean air is not free."
