James Brown remembered in Albany

December 26, 2006

Albany--  The shock of James Brown's death reached Albany where Brown performed and fans say the singer made a lasting impression.

People here say Brown was not only the Godfather of Soul, he was also the Godfather of the South. Musician Ralph Smith went to several of Brown's shows years ago.

In fact, he was scheduled to audition as one of his drummers but never made it to the audition. He says Brown's death was a sad surprise for him and left a void in the music world.

"It was very hurtful, very hurtful. It really hurt the black community. It hurt all of our musicians because remember now, he set the pace for all the rap you hear today, all the rhythm and blues you hear going on," said Smith.

Smith says he's pretty sure that Brown's legacy will continue through music in the future.
