Albany - - Friday marked the start of an eight day holiday celebration for the Jewish religion.

Members of the Temple B'nai Israel celebrated the start of Hanukkah Friday.

Young children sang songs as adults joined along. In Hebrew the word Hanukkah means "dedication".

Members say that's what the holiday is all about.

"We light candles for seven days, for 8 days really. Today we light the first one the middle we call it Shamos. From that one, we light the first one tonight and tomorrow night we light the Shamos and the next one again," says Margarite Bland.

The holiday commemorates the rededication of the holy Temple in Jerusalem. The Greek King of Syria outlawed Jewish rituals and ordered the Jews to worship Greek gods.

The holiday lasts through the 22nd.
